EL DORADO, Kan. – The 14th ranked Butler softball team won its fourth and fifth consecutive conference games on Wednesday, winning 9-4 and 12-1 over Colby at East Park.
Butler (11-1, 5-1) opened conference play at home with two wins over the Trojans (17-11, 3-7).
Game one saw Butler jump on the Trojans with five runs in the first inning, eventually building an 8-0 lead into the third inning. Colby threatened with four runs of their own in the fifth inning to cut the Grizzly lead to 8-4 but Butler held them off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. 21 players out of the Grizzlies 23 on the roster saw playing time in the game. Chloe Odle threw 3.0 scoreless innings getting the start, making way for Maggie Grant who threw 1.1 innings allowing three earned runs. Addy Ewing (W, 3-1) threw the final 2.2 innings allowing no runs, striking out the one and picking up the win.
Butler plated two or more runs in each inning they came to bat in game two, ultimately snagging a five-inning run rule win over the Trojans, 12-1. The Grizzlies used two runs in the first, three each in the second and third and four in the fourth. Colby's lone run of the game was scored off a Grizzly fielding error. Ellie Randall (W, 4-0) started the second game and threw 3.1 innings allowing no earned runs striking out three. Audry Rumsey threw the final 1.2 striking out two.
