GARDEN CITY, Kan. – For the first time in 10 seasons, Butler softball lost a game to the Garden City Broncbusters.
Butler (12-2, 6-2) fell in game one 11-7 before topping the Broncbusters (14-10, 6-4), 13-5 in a game two run rule at Tangeman Sports Complex.
The loss in game one was Butler's first loss to Garden City since 2015 when they fell in the Region 6 semifinals. It also snapped a 30-game Butler winning streak in the series.
In game one, Butler starting pitcher Chloe Odle made it just 0.1 innings before making way for Addy Ewing. The Broncbusters plated two runs in the first inning off Odle. Garden City scored two in the first, three runs in the second and four runs in the sixth inning for their multi-run innings. Ewing threw the final 5.2 innings allowing nine runs on eight hits striking out four and walking two. Garden City homered three times in the game. Butler trailed 5-1 after the second inning before a three-run home run from Kim Yepez pulled the Grizzlies within a run. Garden City then scored six unanswered runs, leading 11-4 going into the seventh. Butler scored three seventh inning runs in the seventh, two off another Yepez home run. Yepez registered a career-high six RBI in the game
Butler got out to another slow start in game two, trailing 2-0 after three innings. The Grizzlies then took a 3-0 lead in the fourth as Jenna Jobe, Caylee Mann and Claire Lopez all delivered RBIs. A Kyler Demel two run double in the fifth made it 5-2 Butler but Garden City plated three in the bottom half to tie it 5-5 entering the sixth. Butler ended the game in the sixth inning plating eight runs to secure the 13-5 win. Freshman pitcher Ellie Randall (W, 5-0) tossed a complete game in 6.0 innings allowing five runs on four hits. She struck out seven and walked two. Caylee Mann finished 3-4 with a team and career-high five RBI.
