Bio
Megan Johnson enters her third season as an assistant coach for Butler softball ahead of the 2025 season, primarily working with the Grizzly pitchers.
The 2024 season saw Johnson's pitching staff hold a 3.04 ERA as Butler finished the season 47-10, 30-2 in conference play. The 3.04 ERA and 309 strikeouts were second best in the KJCCC. Johnson mentored two All-KJCCC pitchers in 2024, guiding sophomore Cheyenne Handsaker to first team honors and freshman Chloe Odle to second team honors. Johnson helped Handsaker throw a team-high 144.0 innings after throwing just 2.2 innings in her freshman campaign. She held a 2.48 ERA to go with a 19-5 record, throwing 12 complete games. Handsaker struck out 150 compared to 41 walks and was named KJCCC Pitcher of the Week on five separate occasions. Her 19 wins were the best in the Jayhawk. Johnson helped Odle to all-conference honors as a true freshman as she made 22 starts and held a 15-4 record. Odle had a 3.05 ERA with 88 strikeouts and seven complete games thrown.
In her first season coaching the Butler arms, the Grizzly pitching staff totaled a team ERA of 3.10, their third consecutive year posting a sub 3.50 team ERA. Johnson was a huge component in the development of Grizzly pitching ace Allyson Montgomery. Montgomery was named the KJCCC MVP as well as an NJCAA D1 Second Team All-American after posting a 2.18 ERA, 25-4 record and 260 strikeouts under the guidance of Johnson.
Johnson returned to Butler as a coach in 2022-23 after having pitched two seasons for the Grizzlies (2018 & 2019). She earned NFCA and NJCAA All-West Region Second Team, Second Team All-KJCCC and First Team All-Region VI honors as a pitcher. In 2019, Johnson pitched a team-high 114.4 innings, held a 2.63 ERA and posted 74 strikeouts to just 24 walks. She owned a 17-4 record as the Grizzlies made a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament, winning a game over Abraham Baldwin before bowing out to Wallace CC in their third game.
Following her time at Butler, Johnson transferred to Liberty University where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science with a minor in Psychology. With a COVID year, Johnson was also able to complete her Master's degree in Healthcare Administration Human Resources.
As a player for the Flames, Johnson played two seasons. In 2020, Johnson pitched in eight games, all starts, and became the first Liberty pitcher in program history to pitch exclusively as a starter, with no relief appearances. She completed the 2020 season with a 4-4 record, 3.93 ERA, four complete games and two shutouts. She went the distance in Liberty's 6-5 win over No. 6-ranked Michigan (Feb. 23), tying the highest-ranked team the Flames had beaten in program history. Johnson then pitched the fifth perfect game in program history, needing just 39 pitches to retire all 15 batters she faced in a 13-0 win over Texas Southern (March 6). She rounded out the season with a 4-1 record and 2.17 ERA in her final five starts.
In 2021 Johnson appeared in 17 games, making seven starts. She posted a 3-3 record with a 3.31 ERA and 22 strikeouts. Johnson earned a two-inning save as Liberty eliminated host Tennessee from the NCAA Knoxville Regional, allowing one hit and no runs over the final two innings.
