Grizzlies outlasted by Barton at home

EL DORADO, Kan. – 17th-ranked Butler soccer tied the game at two in the second half but the seventh-ranked Barton Cougars scored twice more down the stretch to pull ahead and down the Grizzlies, 4-2, on Saturday morning at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

Butler drops to 5-3-5 overall and 4-3-3 in KJCCC play while Barton advances to 7-1-2 overall, the same in conference play. The Grizzlies are still searching for their first win at home this season, sitting at 0-3-2 at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex on the year.

Sophomore Kaitlin Erwin scored five minutes into the game as she nailed a penalty kick in the top right corner of the net to put Butler ahead 1-0.

Barton scored the next two goals with Fiona Jolly scoring at the 24-minute mark to make it 1-1 and Nina Norshie giving the Cougars the 2-1 lead in the 39th minute. Barton went into the break with the 2-1 advantage.

A Barton own goal in the 56th minute gave Butler new life, knotting the game up at two. But the Cougars scored twice more, once in the 62nd minute and another with 15 seconds left in the game.

Siaomee Bagnost for Barton and Brekkyn Pierce for Butler were each assessed yellow cards.

Barton outshot Butler 19-9 while the Grizzlies had nine corner kicks to the Cougars six. Each team had nine fouls. Grizzly keeper Carla Apodaca had eight saves on 12 shots on goal.

Butler hits the road for its next game, traveling to Kansas City for a game at KCKCC on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m.
