Soccer falls on the road in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Butler soccer traveled to Kansas City for a KJCCC game at Kansas City Kansas Community College and came away falling to the Blue Devils 3-1.

18th-ranked Butler (5-4-5, 4-4-3 KJCCC) fell to the 14th-ranked Blue Devils (9-2-2, 7-2-2 KJCCC) after previously tying them 1-1 in El Dorado on Aug. 30. The Grizzlies currently sit in fifth place in the conference out of nine teams. Barton, Hutchinson, KCKCC and Cowley make up the top four.

The Blue Devils scored in the 25th minute as Jaycee Schumann netted a goal to give KCKCC a 1-0 lead. They went into halftime with the 1-0 lead.

KCKCC scored again in the 49th minute to go ahead 2-0 off a Cora Ellermann goal.

Butler got on the board in the 65th minute when sophomore forward Kaitlin Erwin knocked in a goal off a Grizzly corner kick to make it 2-1 with 25 minutes remaining. Erwin is now tied with freshman midfielder Sakiko Manabe for the team lead with four goals.

Butler was unable to hold the Blue Devils off the board and tie the game as KCKCC scored just two minutes later as Schumann netted her second goal of the game making it 3-1.

KCKCC outshot Butler 20-11. They had eight fouls to Butler's seven and each team had six corner kicks.

Grizzly goalkeeper Carla Apodaca finished with five saves on eight shots on goal, allowing all three goals. Freshman keeper Rylie Schiffelbein played 15 minutes and had two saves on two shots. Freshman midfielder Ruby Kilden paced Butler with six shots, three on goal.

Butler hosts No. 10-ranked Hutchinson on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT.
