RICHMOND, Va. – Butler women's cross country turned in a 10th place national finish at Pole Green Park on Saturday afternoon as part of the NJCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championships.
The Grizzly women, fresh off a Region 6 title on Oct. 25th, placed 10th out of 25 teams at the national meet. Cloud County (9th) and Hutchinson (6th) were the lone Region 6 squads to place as high as Butler.
Elizabeth Hernandez was Butler's top finisher coming in 21st (18:02.9). Jesica Mbhamali finished 44th (18:51.1), Alison Unruh came in 46th (18:55.8), Valyrie Freeman finished 76th (19:48.2), Alexa Marshall came in 125th (20:58.3), La Tanya Johnson was 157th (22:15.0) and Jennifer Casas finished in 160th (22:21.4).

The day before the meet at the NJCAA Banquet it was announced that head coach Mark Emerson was named the USTFCCCA NJCAA D1 Central Region Women's Coach of the Year. The award for Emerson marks the first Butler coach since Ryan Turner in 2015 to be named USTFCCCA NJCAA D1 Central Region Women's Coach of the Year.
The cross country season comes to a close and the student-athletes will now turn their attention to the indoor track and field season.
