The Butler baseball team ran its winning streak to seven games with a sweep of Longview (Mo.) in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday at McDonald Stadium.

In both games, Butler jumped to an early lead only to see Longview tie the game in the later innings. Both times, however, Butler responded to go ahead and take the win. The Grizzlies won the first game, 10-7 and the second game, 8-4.

Butler is scheduled to play another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Longview at McDonald Stadium, weather permitting.

GAME 1 – Butler 10, Longview 7

Butler scored five runs in the first inning, thanks in part to two Longview errors and RBI by Michael Cerullo and Jake Huscroft.

Butler added another run in the second when Evan Koehler lined a single up the middle to scored Dalton Wheat, making it a 6-0 Butler lead.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher Brennan Walker was cruising, throwing three shutout innings and allowing just one run through the first four innings.

When Alex Weiss singled in a run in the bottom of the fourth, Butler led 7-1. But Walker faltered in the top of the fifth, giving up four runs including a three-run home run to Dylan Farrel.

Cade Wager came on in relief to get Butler out of the fifth inning still holding a 7-5 lead. Reliever Austin Dubsky allowed two runs in the top of the sixth, however, as Longview tied the game 7-7. Butler had to turn to its closer, Trever Ezell, to get out of the sixth.

Butler's offense showed an ability to respond, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cameron Knight singled to left to drive in Alex Weiss, while Jake Huscroft scored on an errant throw by the catcher. The third run came on an RBI single by Zach Baker.

Ezell then came back out for the top of the seventh and allowed two baserunners but no runs, earning the win.

Alex Weiss went 4-4 at the plate for Butler, while Evan Koehler was 2-4. Zach Baker was 1-3 with two RBI.

GAME 2 – Butler 8, Longview 4

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Butler went ahead on a massive two-run home run to right field for Michael Cerullo. It is his team-leading sixth home run of the season. Jake Huscroft later drove in a run with an RBI single up the middle and Butler led 4-1.

Starting pitcher Grant Hamilton allowed just two run through the first six innings and had a 4-2 lead going to the top of the seventh. Longview then hit four consecutive singles to tie the game 4-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ty Redington hit a two-out single to right to score Zach Baker and Evan Koehler doubled to right center to drive in Redington as Butler regained the two-run lead at 6-4.

In the eighth, Hamilton got two quick outs but then allowed a pair of baserunners. Trever Ezell came on in relief to get the third out.

In the bottom of the eighth, Butler got two more runs, one on an RBI single by Dalton Wheat and the other on a bases loaded walk drawn by Ty Redington to force in a run.

Trever Ezell threw a scoreless ninth to seal the win and earn his seventh save of the season, which is the second-highest current total in NJCAA baseball.
