Soccer named 2012-13 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year

The Butler women's soccer team was recently named the 2012-13 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year for having the highest grade point average in their respective sport. The Grizzlies finished the season with a 3.47 GPA for the 2012-13 school year. It is the first time in the 11-year history of the program that the Grizzlies have received the award.

In addition to the Academic Team of the Year award, the Grizzlies had six players receive Student-Athlete Award accolades. Casie Greenlee earned the Superior Academic Achievement for having a 3.8+ GPA, while Alyssa Miller, Teresa Offerman, Mari Ruvalcaba, Megan Snyder and JeeHye Yi were honored with the Exemplary Academic Achievement award for having a 3.6+ GPA.

"Butler Soccer has had a longstanding tradition of academic excellence and the student-athletes we recruit to our program understand the role academics play," said Butler head coach Adam Hunter. "We are constantly pushing our players to achieve success in the classroom because it is the essence of why they are pursuing a post-secondary education.

"We set academic standards that we expect our players to reach and this year we were outstanding in the classroom," Hunter added. "For us to win the NJCAA Women's Soccer Academic Team of the Year, it confirms that we are about more than just winning soccer games.  We strive to have a soccer program that prepares our players academically and athletically after Butler.  Earning this prestigious academic honor could not have been accomplished without our fine academic advising department and our athletic academic advisor, Shannon Hurt."

This past season marked the seventh time in 11 years that Butler has won the KJCCC Academic Conference Championship. The program has produced 25 Academic All-Americans and 50 KJCCC Academic All-Conference student athletes. Butler soccer is also a six-time NSCAA College Team Academic Award winner and a nine-time NJCAA All-Academic Team recipient. Throughout the history of the program, every team has finished the school year with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or above.

Over 1,600 NJCAA student-athletes met the requirements for individual academic honors, including 169 that earned the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence (4.0 GPA). Superior Academic Achievement (3.8+ GPA) honors went to 592 student-athletes and over 900 met the standard for Exemplary Academic Achievement (3.6+ GPA). NJCAA academic team accolades (3.0+ team GPA) were earned by over 500 programs with 24 winning the distinction as the Academic Teams of the Year.
