Butler shuts out Dodge City for 10th conference win

The Butler soccer team has hit double digits in conference wins with a 5-0 victory over visiting Dodge City on Monday afternoon at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

The No. 6-ranked Grizzlies scored three goals in the first half, two by Kelly Sutton, and added two more in the second half on their way to victory. The win makes Butler 15-2 overall and 10-0 in Jayhawk Conference play. It is the fourth consecutive season for double-digit conference victories for Butler, which is now 45-3 in conference matches since the start of the 2010 season.

Butler's first goal of the contest was scored by Morgan Foster, who took a pass from Yvette Aguilar and then outran a defender for a one-on-one chance with the keeper. Her right-to-left shot nestled in the net.

Kelly Sutton scored her first goal on an assist from Foster, then scored unassisted when she took a corner kick midway through the first half. The ball continued to curve toward the net. The Dodge keeper was able to get a hand on the ball but was not able to knock it away.

In the second half, Maddie Decker hit a ball hard into the net on a crossing assist by Foster in the 57th minute. Butler's final goal came in the 62nd minute, when Dodge City was unable to clear a ball in the box. Aguilar eventually rolled to Madison Wedekind who kicked it in for a 5-0 lead.

Defensively, Butler posted its second consecutive shutout. Keeper Kelsi Langley now has nine clean sheets in the net for the Grizzlies this season.

Butler now has three regular-season matches left, all of which are in conference play. The Grizzlies play at Cowley on Thursday, at home against Cloud County on Sunday and finish the regular season next Wednesday at Allen County.
