Butler shuts out No. 11 St Louis for 200th win

The Butler soccer team broke out offensively in a big way on Friday afternoon, scoring all of its goals in the second half of an 8-0 win over No. 11 St. Louis Community College in a showdown of nationally-ranked teams at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

The third-ranked Grizzlies took 17 shots, 12 of them on goal, in the first half but were shutout in the first half by the St. Louis defense and goalkeeper Sammie Weaver.

The Grizzlies didn't take long to score in the second half. Just 40 seconds into the period, Maddie Decker dribbled through the center of the defense and crossed the ball to a sliding Madison Wedekind who poked the ball into the net.

That was the first of two goals for Wedekind in the second half. Freshmen Jaclyn Means and Madison Zimmer also scored two goals apiece, while Maddie Decker and Yvette Aguilar also scored for the Grizzlies, who scored five goals in a six-minute span midway through the second half.

Goalkeeper Paige LaBadie earned the win and the first shutout of her collegiate career, facing just two shots in the game with no saves.

The win is the 200th in program history for Butler, which played its first season in 2002. The Grizzlies are 200-54-10 since their inception with seven conference titles in their first 12 full seasons of competition.
