Stewart scores pair of goals as #8 Butler defeats Allen, 2-1

Butler freshman forward Alyssa Stewart scored two goals to help the eighth-ranked Grizzlies defeat Allen 2-1 in conference play Tuesday afternoon at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.

Stewart scored a first-half equalizer in the 28th minute for Butler (8-2-1 overall, 4-1-1 conference), then broke the 1-1 tie with the eventual game-winning goal in the 70th minute.

Allen (0-9-0 overall, 0-6-0 conference) scored first off a corner kick set piece in the 25th minute, as the Red Devils had two offensive players in the corner with no Grizzly defensive pressure. A short kick was played to Dorothy Usher, who connected on nearly a 30-yard right-footed strike over Butler goalkeeper Lexi Winkle.

Butler answered just three minutes later after securing an Allen goal kick out of the air inside the midfield circle. Emily Breault headed the ball back upfield to midfielder Isabela Fernandes, who in turn headed it against the Allen defense. A missed kick by a Devil defender left the ball for Stewart, who pressured the play. Stewart then pushed the ball towards the goal and put a shot right past Allen keeper Phoenix Michaelis and inside the left post.

Another Red Devil defensive miscue following a goal kick led to Stewart's second goal. With the wind at its back, Butler grabbed possession of the ball 40 yards out as Marissa Llamas moved the ball forward to Stewart, who found Kourtnee Davis on the outside wing. Davis directed a ball into the 18-yard box, but was headed right back out to Stewart by an Allen defender. From 14 yards out, Stewart kicked a ball past Michaelis to the left side for a Grizzly 2-1 lead.

Allen was unable to have any serious threats in the second half going against a south wind with gusts up to 25 mph. Butler outshot Allen 24-6 in the contest with 15 shots coming on goal. Winkle made two saves and played the first half, while backup keeper Angie Ojeda did not face any shots on goal in the final 45 minutes of play.

Next up for Butler will be a Top 20 showdown, as the Grizzlies host #19 Kansas City Kansas this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Butler defeated KCK 3-2 in overtime back on Sept. 4 in Kansas City. Since losing to the Grizzlies, the Blue Devils (7-1-0 overall, 5-1-0 conference) have won five straight games and trail league-leading Cowley by a half-game in the Jayhawk East standings.

Tuesday's contest was originally scheduled to be played in Iola, but Allen's grass field was not in playable shape. Instead, the game was moved to El Dorado and the two teams flip-flopped home dates on the schedule. The return game, which was scheduled on Saturday, Oct. 19 in El Dorado, will now be played in Iola with a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.

NOTES: Butler improved to 23-0-1 all-time against Allen and remains undefeated against the Red Devils in El Dorado (13-0-0). The Grizzlies have won eight straight against Allen since a scoreless tie in Iola back on Sept. 26, 2014.
