Garden City's offense held in check in run-rule loss to Butler
Garden City, KS-Brock Lummus and Brock Kuehler each homered to lead Butler to a 13-2 victory over Garden City in game one Thursday afternoon at Williams Stadium.
Lummus drove in five runs and Hayden Dyer knocked in three for Butler, which snapped a three-game skid. Four Grizzlies collected multi-hit games including the top three men in the order: Josh Holmes, Dyer, and Justin Hudson.
Matthew Lorencz dropped to 1-7 on the mound for Garden City, which lost its 10th straight conference game. He surrendered 10 runs on eight hits in four innings.
The Grizzlies scored in every inning but the first. Kuheler cranked a solo shot in the second and Lummus crushed a two-run bomb off Lorencz in the third. Butler then put the game away with a five-run fifth powered by a three-run double by Lummus that put the visitors up 10-0.
After Brett Barber's run-scoring double and Conner Thompson's sacrifice fly put Garden City on the board in the bottom of the fourth, the Grizzlies scored three more in the fifth.
Izack Tiger struck out a season-high 11 batters for Butler, improving to 5-4. He scattered three hits and walked six.
