Early Lead Holds for Grizzlies in Road Win Over Coffeyville
Grizzlies Hand Red Ravens First Loss of the Season
COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – Despite low temperatures threatening to cancel the game, Butler and Coffeyville were able to get one nine inning game in before the weather hit as the Grizzlies left town with an 8-4 win over the Red Ravens at Walter Johnson Park on Monday.
Butler (4-1) got out to an early 4-0 lead and never trailed in the game despite being outhit 9-7 by the Red Ravens (4-1). Butler handed Coffeyville its first loss of the season.
Seven Grizzlies finished with a hit with Alex Coester driving in two runs and Breck Romero, Jaden Rose and Brady Todd each finishing with an RBI. The Grizzlies plated a run in the first and added three more in the second to jump ahead 4-0. They added a run in the sixth and eighth and two more in the ninth. Coffeyville plated three in the sixth to make it 5-3 and added a final run in the ninth.
Zach Murkin got the start on the mound for Butler and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings striking out three. Hank Welu (W, 1-0) picked up his first collegiate win throwing 3.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits, striking out three. Van Haneberg threw a scoreless eighth with a strikeout while Jack Haag allowed an unearned run in the ninth but struck out three to close the game out.
The Grizzlies next action comes on Monday as they host Northeast CC for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
