EL DORADO, Kan. – Butler baseball suffered two losses to the Northeast Community College Hawks on Tuesday afternoon in the first games of the season at McDonald Stadium. The Grizzlies fell 18-4 in game one and 10-8 in game two, both seven inning matchups.
Butler (4-4) saw the Northeast (6-5) offense explode in the first game of the day as the Hawks plated 18 runs on 15 hits, scoring multiple runs in every inning but the fifth. The Grizzlies fell behind 2-0 quickly in the top of the first but answered with three runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first as redshirt freshman Cooper Rasmussen hit a three-run home run. Northeast immediately scored twice to regain the lead and did not trail again. Four Hawks had multi-hit games with three driving in three or more runs. Rasmussen drove in all four Butler runs. The Grizzlies used five pitchers with starter Bradyn McClure (L, 1-1) making it 1.2 innings allowing four runs before making way for the bullpen. Hawk pitcher Max Denson earned a 3.0 inning save allowing no runs or walks and striking out four.

Game two of the day was back and forth with Butler leading most of the way before the Hawks used two seventh inning runs to snag the 10-8 victory. Northeast outhit Butler 12-8 but the Grizzlies were benefactors of five Hawk errors. Northeast plated a run in the first and Butler responded in the bottom half with three. The Hawks took a 5-3 lead with four runs in the top of the second but Butler tied it 5-5 in the bottom half on a Brady Todd RBI double and a run off a throwing error. A two run home run from Northeast's Hayden Parrish in the top of the sixth gave Northeast an 8-7 lead but Grizzly freshman Jaden Rose stole home in the bottom half to tie the game 8-8. Butler used four pitchers and walked nine batters despite walking 11 times of their own offensively. Maddux Schrupp (L, 0-1) suffered the loss walking five and striking out three, allowing the final two runs.
