Grizzlies Grind Out Doubleheader Sweep of Des Moines Area
Grizzlies Get Full Team Effort In Sweep of Bears
EL DORADO, Kan. – Butler baseball earned two hard fought wins over Des Moines Area Community College on Friday afternoon at McDonald Stadium to earn a doubleheader sweep and claim a 2-0 series lead.
Butler (6-4) won game one 3-2 and completed the sweep by winning 9-7 in game two, both seven inning affairs. DMACC (5-10) has now lost five straight games.
Both teams combined for six hits in game one with the Grizzlies plating a run each in the second, third and fourth innings to overcome a DMACC two run fourth inning and get the win. Bear starting pitcher Ty Thomson (L, 2-1), a University of Kansas signee, pitched all six innings for DMACC striking out 10 and walking two with all three runs being earned. Butler got a quality start out of sophomore Caden Hinther (W, 1-0) as he worked 5.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, striking out five and walking three. Freshman Van Haneberg earned his first career save as he threw the final two innings striking out four and walking none, allowing no runs on one hit. Butler got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as sophomore Breck Romero doubled to right center, scoring freshman Holden Lough. A wild pitch from Thomson in the third inning made it 2-0 Grizzlies as freshman Brady Todd came home to score. The Grizzlies broke a 2-2 tie with freshman Jaden Rose's first collegiate home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, a solo shot out to right center.
Both teams finished with eight hits in game two but the Grizzlies used four Bear errors and an early grand slam to pull out the 9-7 win. Trailing 4-0 after the top of the second, Rose came up to the plate and hit his second home run of the afternoon, this one a grand slam over center field to tie the game 4-4. Alex Coester then singled up the middle in the same inning scoring two Grizzlies to make it a 6-4 lead. DMACC responded with three unanswered runs to take a 7-6 lead in the top of the fourth before the Grizzlies scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Lough laced a two run single up the middle and sophomore Brandon Latter also singled up the middle scoring Coester. Freshman reliever Maddux Schrupp and sophomore closer Jack Haag held the Bears scoreless for the final 3.2 innings to secure the win.
