Former Butler linebacker/defensive back Kyle Woodall is in his ninth season as a coach on the Grizzly staff in 2024, third as defensive coordinator. He oversees the linebackers and the Grizzly strength and conditioning program alongside his defensive coordinator duties.

In 2023, Woodall led a Butler defense that held six opponents to 20 or fewer points. Butler allowed just 167.4 passing yards per game, third fewest in the KJCCC. The Grizzlies recovered 12 fumbles, the most in the conference. In a 32-7 win over NEO A&M, Woodall's Grizzly defense held the Norsemen to 148 total yards. The Butler defense shined in a 45-10 win on the road at No. 3 ranked Iowa Central, shutting the Tritons out in the second half and tallying six sacks in the game. In one of the most impressive showings of the season, Butler shut out eventual NJCAA national champion Iowa Western in the second half of a 28-21 near loss. Six of the seven Reiver second half drives ended in punts. Woodall had seven All-KJCCC selections on his defense including an NJCAA All-American in Marlin Dean. Of Woodall's linebacker core, three signed with NCAA Division 1 teams with Udoka Ezeani (Boise State), Eunique Valentine (Missouri State) and Demarcious Robinson (Georgia Southern) all moving on to the next level.

In Woodall's first season as defensive coordinator in 2022, Butler finished 8-4 and claimed its 17th all-time bowl victory in a 28-24 win over Kilgore in the Heart of Texas Bowl. Butler finished with a conference leading 20 interceptions and held six opponents under 20 points and three to under 10. Seven defensive players earned All-KJCCC honors while linebacker Norman Massey picked up KJCCC Player of the Week honors twice as well as an  NJCAA Player of the Week recognition under Woodall's tutelage. Other defensive players to pick up awards included Caleb Foster (KJCCC Player of the Week) and Malik Berry (KJCCC Player of the Week). Woodall saw three of his linebackers pick up All-KJCCC second team honors. Four of his linebackers went on to play at four year schools in Massey (ULM), Devaca Parks (Graceland), Berry (Indiana State) and Ethan Stuhlstatz (Lindenwood).

During the Spring 2021 COVID-19 season, Woodall coached All-KJCCC players in Laswon Schultz and John Hankinson III.

During the 2019 season, Woodall's sophomore linebacking core of Charlie Gray (Bonner Springs, KS) and Justin Amaro (Goddard, KS) set the pace defensively for the Grizzlies who held opponents to 17.2ppg. Gray led the team in tackles with 75 while adding in five sacks, 12.5 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. Gray picked up KJCCC second-team honors last season. Justin Amaro finished the season with 49 tackles, 7.5 for loss. He recorded a season best eight tackles twice during the season against Hutchinson and Iowa Western. Amaro was voted honorable mention all KJCCC a season ago.

Prior to moving to the offensive side of the ball, Woodall had 13 All-Conference players at the linebacker position – most recently, Charlie Gray (second-team) and Justin Amaro (honorable mention).

In 2018, Woodall coached and mentored three All-KJCCC players in Amare' Barno, who received second-team honors and Hunter Kier and Juwan Mitchell were honorable mention selections in 2018.

During the 2017 season, Woodall coached current Nebraska LB Will Honas, who received first-team conference honors in 2017. Both Charlie Benton (second team) and Hassan Belton (honorable mention) also received honors during last season. The Grizzlies'; defense led the nation in passing yards allowed per game (98.4). Butler also led the Jayhawk Conference in points allowed and total yards allowed per game.

In 2016, Woodall coached current Texas Tech LB Tony Jones, who received conference honors during his two seasons at Butler. Both Jones and Sean Bernard earned second team All-KJCCC honors while helping the Grizzlies to a NJCAA ranking of ;17th and a Salt City Bowl appearance.

In Woodall's first year on staff in 2015, the Grizzlies won their 25th Jayhawk Conference title and finished 9-2 overall. Butler had three linebackers receive All-Conference honors, with Jones getting placed on the first team. Demarcus Lloyd and Sean Rodriguez both garnered honorable mention honors. The defense also led the conference in least points allowed.

Woodall played at Butler from 2006-2007, helping the Grizzlies to a 23-1 overall record and winning the Region VI and Jayhawk Conference championships both seasons.

In 2007, Woodall was a team captain on Butler's NJCAA National Championship squad that finished with a perfect 12-0 record. During that season, Woodall earned honorable mention All-Jayhawk Conference honors at safety.

Following Butler, Woodall continued his playing career at Sam Houston State University and later Washburn University.

A Salina, Kan., native, Woodall played at Salina Central High School, where he was a two-time All-State safety and was a team captain on the Mustangs' 2005 Class 5A undefeated state championship team.

Woodall began his football coaching career at Gardner-Edgerton High School, where he coached the safeties and linebackers for four seasons before joining the Butler staff.
