Bio

Former Grizzly cornerback Maurice Gray enters his third season on the Butler coaching staff in 2024 as the Defensive Pass Game Coordinator and Defensive Backs coach.

In Gray's second season on staff he saw two defensive backs in Kaden White and Semaj James be named All-KJCCC honorable mention. The Grizzlies allowed the third fewest pass yards per game in the KJCCC (167.4) and Gray saw four of his defensive backs, Gabe White (Abilene Christian), Semaj James (Troy), Ashton Levells (Florida International) and Kaden White (Towson) ink with NCAA Division 1 programs.

The 2022 season saw the Grizzly defense lead the KJCCC in interceptions with 20 thanks in part to Gray's defensive backs. Gray coached All-KJCCC honrable mention cornerback Caleb Brown that season as Brown tallied five interceptions and 39 total tackles. Gray sent five defensive backs to four year universities in Brown (Hawaii), Chance Omli (UTPB), Jalen Moore (UCO), Chris Rhodes (Arkansas) and Cade Gatschet (Fort Hays State).

Prior to joining the Grizzly staff, Maurice spent the last six seasons coaching in the KJCCC with a four year stint at Highland and was at Hutchinson the last two seasons. Gray helped guide the Hutchinson Blue Dragons to their first NJCAA National Title in school history in the spring of 2021 and won the Region VI Playoffs in the fall of 2021 with the Blue Dragons. In 2018, Gray was named the NJCAA Defensive Backs Coach of the Year and in the spring of 2021 he coached the No. 1 safety in the NJCAA that went to Auburn University. He followed that up coaching the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year in the fall of 2021 in Ro Torrence that also signed with Auburn.

During his coaching tenure, coach Gray has sent 39 defensive backs to NCAA Division I Universities and has had three former players play in the National Football League. He has coached a total of 10 NJCAA All-American defensive backs while winning five KJCCC crowns and two NJCAA titles as a coach and player.

The Warner Robins, Georgia, native, was a strong football player himself. Gray earned first team All-KJCCC honors and NJCAA All-American honors while helping Butler to 12-0 and 11-1 records in 2006 and 2007. In two seasons with Butler, he finished with 94 tackles and nine interceptions and helped the Grizzles win a National Championship in 2007. After playing at Butler, Gray transferred to Oklahoma State where he played in 22 games during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Gray has a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Oklahoma State University and currently resides in El Dorado.
