Butler Gets Top-25 Win on the Road, Defeats Coffeyville at Nellis Hall for 1st Time in 3 Years

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – The third ranked Butler women's basketball team went to Coffeyville and earned a 68-50 win over the 21st-ranked Red Ravens on Wednesday evening at Nellis Hall.

The win for the Grizzlies (9-0, 3-0 KJCCC) kept them undefeated on the year while handing Coffeyville (8-2, 3-1 KJCCC) their first conference loss.

Butler earned its first win in three years at Nellis Hall, with the last win coming on Feb. 24th, 2020, as Mike Helmer's squad defeated the Red Ravens 68-62 to clinch their second straight KJCCC East title.

The Grizzlies led by just two after the first quarter, 17-15. They opened things up in the second quarter with a 10-0 run highlighted by three straight buckets from Dayuna Colvin who finished with 14 points on the night. The run put Butler ahead 27-16 with 5:26 minutes to play in the first half. Butler eventually went into halftime with a 36-24 advantage.

The second half saw Coffeyville get within single digits following a made three to make it 50-42 with nine minutes left in the game. Butler immediately reeled off a 9-0 run to take a 59-42 lead with five minutes left, essentially icing the game.

Freddie Wallace tied a career-high, dropping 30 points on 11-17 shooting as she led the Grizzly offensive attack all evening.

Maycee James joined Wallace and Colvin as the third Grizzly to score in double digits as she tallied 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. Randi Harding added a team-high five assists and Tiana Winn totaled eight points and a team-high six rebounds.

Butler shot 42.6% from the field and held the Red Ravens to 34% shooting. The Grizzlies were 12-17 from the charity stripe with Coffeyville knocking down 13-23. Coffeyville outrebounded Butler 37-36. Butler forced 23 turnovers and coughed the ball up just 15 times themselves. The Grizzlies had just five bench points in the win. Bailey Layman led Coffeyville with 12 points and Karys Washington added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Grizzlies now turn their attention to Saturday as the Barton Cougars travel to the Power Plant with tipoff set for 2 p.m. CT.
