EL DORADO, Kan. – It was a historic evening for Butler forward Freddie Wallace as the Grizzlies picked up a 62-50 over the Cowley Tigers at the Power Plant on Wednesday.
Wallace, a sophomore from Lincoln, Neb., became Butler women's basketball's all-time scoring leader as a layup off an assist from Maycee James at the 5:58 mark of the third quarter gave her 1,087 career points. She surpassed Jamillah Bonner's 1,086 career points she achieved from 2012-13. Wallace finished the game with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Butler (23-7, 17-7 KJCCC) earned the win and is locked into the 3-seed in the upcoming Region VI Tournament. They will host a to be announced opponent at the Power Plant on Tuesday, March 12th. Cowley ends the regular season with a 16-14 overall record, 10-14 in league action. The two teams split the two meetings this season with each winning at home.
J'unti Franklin was the only other Grizzly to score in double figures as she added 17 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists.
The Grizzlies defense had a strong showing, allowing just four first quarter points from Cowley. They held Cowley to 26.8% shooting from the field and 14.3% shooting from three (3-21). Butler forced 24 turnovers on the evening.
Nine of Butler's sophomores were honored for sophomore day following the game.
