Grizzlies Outlast Coffeyville To Open Spring Semester

EL DORADO, Kan. – The Butler women's basketball squad picked up a 52-48 win over the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Saturday afternoon in the Power Plant.
Butler (11-2, 6-2 KJCCC) earned its fifth consecutive win and first of the 2025 calendar year as they defeated the Red Ravens (10-3, 5-3) in a defensive slugfest.
The Grizzlies shot just 29.8% from the field and were outscored 24-12 in the paint but knocked down eight triples and connected on 10-14 free throws to help them to the win. The Grizzly defense held Coffeyville to 35.7% shooting and just 4-24 from outside. Each team turned the ball over 16 times.
Freshman guard Keegan Yarick posted a double-double for Butler with 10 points and 10 rebounds, her second of the season, while freshman guard Destiny Smith added 10 points off the bench, knocking down three triples. Freshman forward Kenzie Galliart finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Coffeyville got out to a 7-1 lead midway through the first quarter before the Grizzlies got their scoring going as Smith drained a three off a Mya Mayberry assist. Freshman guard Ashley Singhateh then hit two free throws a possession later and Mayberry then hit the Grizzlies second three to make it 9-7 Butler following a Red Raven missed shot.
The first half remained close as Butler led 15-11 after the first quarter. The Grizzlies did take a 10-point lead at 24-14 following a Yarick three midway through the second quarter but Coffeyville scored the final seven points of the quarter to make it a 26-23 Grizzly lead at the break.
Butler opened the second half with seven straight points forcing a Coffeyville timeout on the way to a 33-23 advantage. They held the 10 point lead through the quarter outscoring the Ravens 21-14 in the frame.
Despite just five fourth quarter points the Grizzlies escaped with the win. The first points of the fourth came three and a half minutes in as Butler sophomore forward Lucia Lara connected on a three to make it 50-37 Grizzlies. Over the final three minutes Coffeyville outscored Butler 7-0 but the Grizzlies held on for the win.
Coffeyville was led by Norika Welch's 12 points to go with five rebounds. Karys Washingotn had 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Grizzlies stay home next, hosting No. 1 Hutchinson on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Power Plant.
