Butler Falls to Dodge City in Region 6 Semifinals
Butler Women's Basketball Battles Top Seed Conquistadors to the End
HAYS, Kan. – The 2024-25 Butler women's basketball season has come to a close in the Region 6 Semifinals.
Four-seed Butler (23-8) lost 67-58 to the one-seed Dodge City Conquistadors (28-4) on Friday afternoon at Fort Hays State's Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Butler never led in the game and trailed by as much as 19 late in the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies shot just 29.7% (19-64) from the field while holding the Conqs to 39.3% (24-61) shooting. The Conqs outscored Butler in the paint 28-14.
Dodge City's first five made field goals were threes as they opened with a 15-7 lead, pushing it to 20-10 at the end of the quarter. A Mercy Wamet layup midway through the second quarter pulled Butler within four at 24-20. Butler added just one more bucket over the final four minutes as Dodge City led 30-22 at halftime.
The third quarter saw Butler trim the Conq lead to six multiple times, but Butler trailed by 10 heading to the fourth. Dodge scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to jump out to a 55-39 lead and later led 67-48 with 3:10 to play but Butler fought back going on a 10-0 run to close the game out.
Three Grizzlies scored in double figures as Destiny Smith and Mya Mayberry each finished with 11 points and Keegan Yarick added 10. Mayberry had seven rebounds and four assists while Yarick hauled in eight rebounds. Ashley Singhateh led Butler with 10 rebounds but was just 1-9 from the field. Three Dodge City starters tallied double figures led by Shorna Preston's 17 points and 12 rebounds. Layla-J Cameron had 14 points and 10 assists and Mia Jordan had 13 points and eight rebounds.
Butler finished 0-3 vs. Dodge City on the season. The Grizzlies won 20+ games for the third consecutive season under head coach Mike Helmer and advanced to the Region 6 semifinals for the third straight season as well.
Mayberry was named to the NJCAA Region 6 All-Tournament team for her efforts.
Butler sees three sophomores exit in Awa Jawara, Alba Cunill and Mercy Wamet.
