Madi Young and Jerod Elcock named finalists for Greater Wichita Area Female and Male Athlete of the Year award

Butler Community College student athletes Madi Young and Jerod Elcock have been selected as finalists for the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission Junior College Female and Male Athlete of the Year announced the commission last week. 

This is the second year in a row Derby native Madi Young has been a finalist for this award as she won Junior College Female Athlete of the Year a year ago. The sophomore softball player has etched her name in Butler Softball history with an incredible two and a half years playing for the Grizzlies.

Young led the team to back-to-back KJCCC, Region VI and District titles and was twice named to the NJCAA First Team All-American team. Player of the Year in the Jayhawk Conference this season, Young led the conference and nation in a handful of offensive categories.

Young was, once again, one of the nation's best hitters, finishing the season in the top-five in the entire nation in doubles (1st - 29), on-base percentage (2nd - .646), batting average (3rd - .564), slugging percentage (3rd - 1.141), triples (3rd - 9) and runs scored (4th - 95). She stole 48 bags on the season, good for 13th in the NJCAA while getting caught just three times. Young hit leadoff for the Grizzlies the last two and a half seasons and in her 492 plate appearances was struck out just three (3) times.  

Elcock, the sophomore sprinter from Carone, Trinidad and Tobago, finished out his career with the Grizzlies with multiple national championships on the track. Aside from winning the indoor 60 meter dash national title, Elcock added two more firsts and a runner-up finish at the NJCAA Outdoor Championships last month in Hutchinson, KS.

Elcock was part of the Butler men's 4x100 relay team that took gold at the National meet, which gave Elcock his second national title this calendar year. He ran the final leg of the relay that clocked a 39.70. He followed that up with his third national championship as he won the men's 200 meter dash running a wind-aided 20.45. Elcock also posted a runner-up finish in the 100 meter running a wind-aided 10.03. he scored 20.5 points in the meet helping the Grizzlies to a 5th place finish in the meet. 

Not only did Elcock dominate at Butler this year, but he also competed at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, in Štark Arena, Beograd, Serbia in late March. He qualified for the finals in the 60 meter and finished 6th place overall in his first world competition.

Elcock was a two-time USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week along with being named KJCCC Athlete of the Week twice this season.

The 24th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet, featuring retired MLB great and award namesake Buster Posey, will take place on Wednesday, June 29th at the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview. Reception will begin at 5:30pm with the banquet starting at 7:00pm.
