Butler Football closes out spring with kids day, spring game and firework show

It was a festive night at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex as the Butler Grizzlies hosted their annual spring game in the first event of the Brice Vignery era.

The scrimmage between the offensive and defensive players featured four touchdowns including a Chance Omli interception returned for a touchdown as the purple offense defeated the white defense, 21-7 in El Dorado on Sunday.

"Just to see that many people out here for the spring game warms my heart," Vignery said. "To get people in this stadium and re-energized for Butler football is what we wanted to do tonight."

Butler hosted a kids clinic prior to the game and the fans were treated to smoothies, food trucks, autographs from players and a 16 minute post game fireworks show that will last long in the memories of everyone who attended.

On the field, the Grizzlies defensive line was very impressive, getting to the quarterback multiple times. The Butler offense also put together a strong night. Jacobi Myers and Jake Wolff both threw touchdowns, including a nice two minute drive at the end of the first half that ended in a touchdown pass to Karter Johnson. KJ Shankle also took a 23 yard rush to the end zone in the first quarter.

"I was really pleased with how fast our defense came out and started," Vignery said. "That's always the thing that we talk about, is come out hard and fast. Coach Haremza and coach Woodall really settled in and I'm really excited to see where we can take this."

The spring game will serve as a precursor for the Grizzlies' 2022 season, the first under Vignery. The Grizzlies open the season on August 27th at home against Garden City in a rematch of the Jayhawk Conference Semifinal that the Broncbusters won last season.

"We're going to get back here in July and get this thing going. I'm really excited with the direction we're going. We're going to have a program built on integrity, we're going to have a program built on high character kids, and I think that's what we have here," finished Vignery.
