Former Grizzly Justin Simmons earns Division I all-conference honors for Nebraska-Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -- Former Butler basketball standout Justin Simmons has earned the first All-Summit honor in Omaha men's basketball program history, as the conference office released the 2012-13 all-conference teams on Thursday. Simmons was named to the All-Summit Second Team and the All-Newcomer team.

In his first year as a Maverick, Simmons averaged a team-leading 16.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.7 blocks per game. He ranked fourth in the Summit League for scoring, second in field goals made (196) and eighth in free throw percentage (.781). Simmons scored 20 or more points in 11 different games this season, including four straight from Jan. 24 to Feb. 2, and he scored in double figures in all but five games this season.

All-conference teams and superlatives were selected by a vote of the league's nine head coaches, sports information directors and select media members.

Omaha capped its 2012-13 season last week. In their second year as a reclassifying Division I school and their first year as a member of the Summit League, the Mavericks finished with a record of 11-20 (6-10 Summit League).

Simmons played for Butler during the 2011-12 season, leading the Grizzlies in scoring with 16.7 points per game, including a 36-point performance against Iowa Western in December of 2011.
