The Butler women's track team had one of their best Region VI performances in recent years winning the KJCCC East title and finishing third place in Region VI.
The accolades didn't stop there. Shanique Masters, who won the 600m, 800m, runner-up in the Distance medley Relay and third place in the 4x800 relay, was named the Female 'Athlete of the Meet' and head coach Dustin Mettler was named women's indoor 'Coach of the Year.'
" It feels good to be named Women's coach of the year, but I cannot take any credit for this award," mentioned head coach Dustin Mettler. "If it wasn't for the girls on our team believing in us and our assistant coaches; Greg Franklin, Steve Jackson and Dallas Thompson this award wouldn't have been awarded to me. This award is a team award. Thank you to everyone who has been involved."
Butler scored 123 points in the region, behind Region champions Barton (169.33) and runner-up Cloud County (128.33). The 123 points scored by the Grizzlies was 31 points higher than Cowley, who finished 4th in Region VI and 2nd in the KJCCC East.
"We have some extremely tough teams to compete against in the east," said head coach Dustin Mettler. "For us to win is such an honor and it is also a good indication that we are doing to the rights by recruiting talented student-athletes and what we're doing to prepare them for championship meets is working."
Shanique Masters dominated the meet in her four events finishing in the top four in all of them. She won the 600m run and the 800m run. She was the third leg in the women's Distance medley Relay that finished Region VI runner-up and was the fourth leg in the third place finished 4x800m Relay team.
"I am very proud of Shanique," commented Mettler. "We had a race plan going into the meet and that was to keep herself in a good position throughout the race to help herself win an event or score high in it. She executed the race plan very well."
Linesha Thompson had a big day for the Grizzlies finishing Region VI runner-up in the 60m dash and the 200m dash and third place in the 400m.
Kaleb McDonald also placed in all four of her events finishing runner-up in the DMR, third in the 200m dash and the 400m and fifth in the 60m.
Zadue St.Louis was a four event point scorer for Butler finishing second in the 800m and the DMR with a third place finish in the 800m and the 4x800 Relay.
