Butler men struggle in 84-79 loss at Pratt

PRATT, Kan. - The Butler men finished non-conference action on the road, where they struggled in an 84-79 loss against Pratt.

Shomari Triggs finished with a game-high 25 points, hitting 13-of-13 free throws in the loss. Larry Fitzgerald added 17 points for Butler (14-4 overall), who hit under 35 percent (22-of-63) from the field.

Butler never led in the contest, as Pratt jumped out to an 11-1 lead to open the game. The Grizzlies pulled within one point on three different occasions during the first half.

Trailing 29-20 with 7:20 to play in the opening half, Shomari Triggs scored nine points - including 7-of-7 foul shots - during a 10-2 Butler run.

Pratt would push the lead back to six, but a Reed Rowell field goal and a Larry Fitzgerald three-point play put Butler down just 38-37 with 2:27 before the break.

However, the Beavers would end the half with a 10-3 run, including three free throws by Javis Flynn as he was fouled at the buzzer.

Pratt extended the lead to as many as 14 points, 71-57, with 7:27 to play. In the final minutes of the contest, the Grizzlies managed to cut the deficit to four, using a 7-0 run in a 55-second span. Bakari Triggs hit two foul shots with 10.5 seconds remaining to make the score 83-79, but Butler could come no closer.

The contest was plagued by 60 fouls and both teams combined to shoot 80 free throws. Butler hit 29-of-41 (70.7 percent) from the charity stripe, while Pratt made 31-of-39 (79.5 percent).

Robert Davis led Pratt (10-6) with 17 points, hitting 4-of-8 three-pointers. Taylor Schieber added 14 points for the Beavers.

The Grizzlies will open Jayhawk East conference play at home against Cowley on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KFH 98.7 FM and 1330 AM.
