Young and Cameron up for Greater Wichita Area Athlete of the Year Awards

Madi Young of the Butler softball team and Josh Cameron of the Butler Baseball team have been selected as finalists for the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission 2021 Junior College Athletes of the Year.

The annual ceremony recognizes the achievements and dedication of local youth, high school, college and professional athletes and coaches. Each year, Wichita area athletes are awarded for outstanding performances in basketball, football, volleyball, track & field, baseball, and more. 

After their seasons were cut short a year ago, both Madi and Josh showed grit and resiliency to come back this year and lead their teams to very successful seasons. Young led the Grizzly softball team to their 10th straight KJCCC Championship, 5th straight Region VI title and 5th straight District Title and capped it off with a 5th place finish at the National Tournament. Cameron led the Butler Baseball team to a Region VI Runner-up finish, their highest since the 2006 season, and became the Grizzlies first 1st Team All-American in the last two decades.

Madi Young, a sophomore academically at Butler was a graduate of Derby High School in Derby, KS. Young became a First Team All-American after putting together one of the best offensive seasons any Grizzly has done in program history. Not only did Young lead her team in a number of offensive categories this season but also led the entire NJCAA across a number of stat categories this season. Young finished first in the entire NJCAA in runs scored (111), doubles hit (34) and stolen bases (58). She was second in the country in total hits (102) was third in the nation in batting average as she hit .544 on the season and third in the NJCAA in on-base percentage at (.608). Young has yet to be struck out in her collegiate career in over 250 plate appearances. Young also finished the season with 12 homeruns and six triples while recording 54 RBI's. She also had a slugging percentage of 1.000 throughout the season. Young had a fielding percentage of .918 assisting on 88 outs, recording 58 putouts and was part of 12 double plays during the year. Young set new school records this season in runs scored (111) and doubles (34) and started in all the Grizzlies 55 games. Young was also a First Team NFCA All-American, First Team All-Region and Second Team All-KJCCC player.

Josh Cameron, a recent graduate of Butler was a graduate of Pflugerville High School in Pflugerville, TX. Cameron was named First Team NJCAA All-American after becoming one of the best power hitters in the country this season and one of the best to come through Butler Community College. Cameron hit .412 on the season finishing second in the entire NJCAA in homeruns with 25 in just 52 games played. Cameron ended the year with 73 RBI's and 63 runs scored. He had an on-base percentage of .518 with a slugging percentage of .925, good for second in the KJCCC and third in the Nation. Cameron hit 14 doubles, two triples and had 166 total bases this season. he also led the KJCCC in hit by pitches getting plugged 15 times. Cameron was the designated hitter much of the season but also played a handful of game in right field. Cameron had a fielding percentage of .955 with 29 putouts and three assists on the season. Cameron was a first team All-KJCCC recipient as well as a first team All-Region VI award winner this season.

The 23rd Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet presented by the Kamerion Wimbley Foundation will be held on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview. Former KC Chiefs star, Dante Hall is the special guest.
