For the second straight year, Madi Young wins Greater Wichita Area Junior College Female Athlete of the Year

It has been quite junior college career for Derby native Madi Young as she was named for the second straight year the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission Junior College Female Athlete of the Year.

Young was voted as the top Junior College Female Student Athlete in the Greater Wichita Area at the commissions annual banquet in late June. Young won this same award last year after a stellar season with the Grizzlies softball program.

During her tenure at Butler, Young led the team to back-to-back KJCCC, Region VI and District titles and was twice named an NJCAA First Team All-American. Player of the Year in the Jayhawk Conference this season, Young led the conference and nation in a handful of offensive categories in both of her seasons.

Like last year, Young was, once again, one of the nation's best hitters. She finished this season in the top-five in the entire nation in doubles (1st - 29), on-base percentage (2nd - .646), batting average (3rd - .564), slugging percentage (3rd - 1.141), triples (3rd - 9) and runs scored (4th - 95). She stole 48 bags on the year, good for 13th in the NJCAA while getting caught just three times. Young hit leadoff for the Grizzlies the last two and a half seasons and in her 492 plate appearances was struck out just three (3) times.

In her acceptance speech Madi thanked her teammates, coaches, the Butler staff, her family, and her lord and savior Jesus Christ for everything they contributed to her success and ability to win this award.

"What an honor it is to receive this award," Young said. "My time at Butler has been amazing and I am really appreciative of everything it has given me and the doors it has opened."

Young is transferring to the University of Central Arkansas this coming year and we wish her nothing but the best at the next level.
