Despite winning a share of the Jayhawk West Conference title this spring, the Butler baseball team had just one player selected first team all-conference.

Relief pitcher Bennett Scherer was Butler's only first team pick. Butler had five players selected as second team all-conference - starting pitcher Zach Bravo, first baseman Parker Base, catcher Colby Standard and outfielders Joshua Cox and Patrick Bethea. Javier Pena and Dillan Janak were named honorable mention.

The all-conference selections were released on Monday.

The Grizzlies did have the Co-Coach of the Year in BJ McVay. He had his finest season in his nine years as head coach, winning 39 games and leading Butler to its first conference title since 2010. This marks the second straight season in which McVay has been honored, as he was also Coach of the Year following a 34-19 season in 2018.

Scherer is a sophomore from Lake Lotawana, Mo. appeared in 28 games this season as Butler's closer, going 3-3 with 11 saves and a 4.46 ERA. His 11 saves rank third in Butler history behind Trever Ezell (15 in in 2014) and Greg Johnson (12 in 2007).

Bravo, a sophomore from Albuquerque who transferred from Eastern Arizona, went 7-4 on the season and led the Grizzlies in innings pitched with 80. He struck out 97 batters and had a 4.27 ERA.

Base, hailing from Abilene, Kan., hit .310 with eight home runs and 47 runs batted in while playing in 56 games. The sophomore also had a team-high 18 doubles and stole 12 bases.

Standard is a freshman from Midland, Texas. He played in 47 games as either the catcher or designated hitter, hitting .338 with four homers and 29 RBI.

Bethea is a sophomore from Lewisville, Texas. As the team's leadoff hitter, he led the Grizzlies in hits (66) and stolen bases (36) while batting batting .340 with eight home runs and 40 RBI.

Cox is a sophomore from Thornton, Colo. He started all 58 games for Butler in left field, hitting .317 with 64 hits. He had 11 homers, which was third most on the team, along with 44 RBI. Cox also was second-best on the Grizzlies with 30 stolen bases.

Starting pitcher Dillan Janak, a freshman from Souix Falls, S.D. earned honorable mention honors. He went 10-1 on the season and was 6-0 in conference games with three complete games. He had a 3.26 ERA overall, and had a 2.96 ERA against conference opponents.

Javier Pena, a sophomore from Kansas City, Kan., was also an honorable mention selection. He played at third base, second base, right field and DH. He won the team's triple crown, leading Butler in batting average (.342), home runs (14) and RBI (53). He finished his career with 31 homers, tying him for fourth on the all-time Butler list with Connor Hurst.
