Butler sweeps DMACC in three-game home series; score 30 runs in opener

Butler baseball set a school record for most runs scored in a game, while freshman pitcher Izack Tiger threw a no-hitter in the series finale during a three-game home series sweep over Des Moines Area (Iowa) this past weekend.

Butler (8-1) opened up the series on Friday with a wild 30-13 victory over the Bears, rallying from an 8-0 deficit and taking charge with an 11-run third inning. The Grizzlies

The Grizzlies finished off the three-game sweep on Saturday with two wins over DMACC, taking the first game 5-2 and finishing with Tiger's no-hitter in a 10-0 run-rule win in five innings.

Butler returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday against Highland, beginning at 1:00 p.m from Topeka's Bettis Sports Complex. The Grizzlies return home Saturday for a doubleheader against Highland, starting at 1:00 p.m. from McDonald Stadium.

 

Butler 30, Des Moines Area 13

Thomas Beiswanger had a 5-for-6 hitting performance with a home run, scoring five runs and driving in three runs to lead the Grizzlies' offense during Friday's opener.

Every Butler starter had at least one hit and one run, with eight Grizzlies scoring at least two runs. Beiswanger and Brandon Ryan each scored five runs, while Jackson Syring and Austin Portner both scored four times.

Dylan Werries and Josh Cameron each had four RBIs, Syring went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three runs batted in.

Butler fell into an 8-0 hole after the top of the first inning, as the Bears tagged Grizzly starter Dillan Janak for eight runs on eight hits. After a leadoff single by Dylan Voves followed by a groundout to move Voves to second, DMACC took a 7-0 lead behind seven consecutive hits  – capped with a two-run double by Ben Nippolt. The Bears added an extra run on a throwing error before the third out.

Butler answered back with a five-run first inning all with two outs. The Grizzlies opened the inning with singles from Jackson Syring and Dylan Werries. After a double play moved Syring to third, Josh Cameron reached first on a throwing error which scored Syring.

With runners at the corners following another throwing error, Cameron scored from third base on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Thomas Beiswanger cut the lead to 8-3 with an RBI single to left to score Austin Portner. Bryce Zimmerer drove in the final two runs with a single up the middle, which scored Beiswanger and Brandon Ryan.

In the Butler second, the Grizzlies tied the game with three runs, as Portner hit a two-out single up the middle, stole second and advanced to home on a throwing error. Following a walk to Ryan, Beiswanger tied the game by hitting Butler's first home run of the season – a two-run shot to left field.

DMACC went back in front 9-8 in the top of the third on a Nippolt RBI single to score Carson Schau, but the Grizzlies took command in the bottom-half with an 11-run inning – scoring the first nine runs before the Bears recorded an out.

Butler loaded the bases on a Zimmerer single, a hit by pitch to Syring and a Werries walk. Another hit-by-pitch to Colby Standard tied the contest at 9-all, then Cameron clubbed a grand slam homer to center to move the Grizzlies in front 13-9.

Butler put runners at second and third following a Portner walk and a Ryan single, then a double-steal moved both runners in scoring position. Beiswanger followed with a double to score both runs, then Noah Argenta added an RBI double to center to drive in Beiswanger. A walk to Zimmerer, then a balk with Syring batting moved two runners in scoring position again. Syring then hit an infield single to score Argenta for a 17-9 lead.

DMACC finally got an out on a strikeout, but Butler scored two more runs on a Standard RBI single, then Syring came home on a throwing error.

Both teams scored just one run in the fourth inning – DMACC's Carter Troncin scored on a one-out bases loaded walk to Kaleb Harrison, while Argenta hit a one-out single to right-center to plate Beiswanger.

Butler essentially put the game out of reach with a seven-run fifth inning, padding its lead to 27-10. The Grizzlies scored all seven runs with two outs, as a balk with the bases loaded scored Cameron and a wild pitch brought in Portner for the first two runs.

With runners at the corners, Syring hit an infield single to third, scoring Ryan. Werries then cleared the bases with a three-run double to right-center, then scored on a Standard RBI single to cap the scoring.

Butler added three more runs in the sixth behind an RJ Lara sacrifice fly and RBI singles by Syring and Werries, with Argenta scoring the Grizzlies' 30th run.

Despite giving up eight earned runs on 15 hits over 3 1/3 innings, Janak (2-0) received the win. Reliever Garrett DeHaas provided 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit while striking out two batters. John Short threw the final two innings, allowing three runs on four hits – all coming in the seventh inning.

DMACC had three players with three hits each – Troncin, Grant Bohling and Elijah Rude. Troncin led the Bears with three runs, while Nippolt drove in a team-high three runs.

Bears starter Will Moritz lasted just two innings, giving up 10 runs – three earned – on seven hits, walking four and striking out two. Butler tagged the DMACC bullpen (a total of five relievers) for 20 runs on 16 hits, with 15 of the runs earned.

 

Butler 5, Des Moines Area 2

In Saturday's opener, both teams received solo home runs for their first runs of the game. DMACC's Carter Troncin hit a solo homer to right-center in the top of the first inning off Grizzly starter Nate Adler, while Brandon Ryan answered with a home run to right field in the second against Bears starter Kolton Scherbenske.

Troncin put DMACC up 2-1 in the top of the third when he hit his second home run in as many at bats on a solo blast to left field.

In the bottom of the third, Butler took a 3-2 lead when the Bears committed two errors on the same play. With runners at the corners with one out, Jackson Syring scored from third when Josh Cameron hit a ball up the middle that went off DMACC shortstop Ben Nippolt and into center field. On the throw back into the infield, center fielder Dylan Voves sailed his throw past the Grizzly clubhouse in an attempt to gun down Colby Standard at third base.

Butler added a run each in the fifth and sixth innings, as Austin Portner hit a two-out single to center to score Standard for a 4-2 lead, then Dylan Werries added an RBI single up the middle to score Noah Argenta in the sixth.

Adler (2-0) picked up the win after throwing four innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, two walks and striking out four.

Butler's bullpen closed out the contest by giving up just one hit over the final three innings. Left-hander Cade Phelps threw a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts in the fifth, then allowed a leadoff single in the sixth, but received an inning-ending double play. Zach Nagel finished the game with a perfect inning for his first save of the year.

Butler managed only four hits in the contest, but was helped out with four walks and four hit batters from Scherbenske. Brandon Ryan went 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI to lead the Grizzlies.

 

Butler 10, Des Moines Area 0 (5 innings)

Grizzly freshman Izack Tiger tossed a no-hitter with four strikeouts over five innings in the series finale. Tiger retired the first 14 batters before issuing a two-out walk to Kyle Westhoff in the top of the fifth inning.

Butler broke a scoreless tie with a seven-run third inning, with Brandon Ryan providing the big hit of the inning with a three-run homer with two outs.

DMACC starter Kaden Peterson recorded a strikeout to open the Butler third, but a walk to Thomas Beiswanger, a hit-by-pitch to Bryce Zimmerer and a single by Jackson Syring loaded the bases.

Dylan Werries put the Grizzlies on the board with a two-run single through the left side of the infield to score Beiswanger and Zimmerer, then Colby Standard followed with an RBI single to plate Syring.

Butler went up 4-0 after Josh Cameron doubled to center field, which scored Werries. Two batters later, Ryan clubbed his second homer of the year to straight-away center.

RJ Lara added a solo homer in the fourth inning off Bears reliever Bret Price to extend Butler's lead to 8-0.

In the fifth inning, Butler ended the game by run-rule with two runs. DMACC reliever Blake Grevengoed issued a pair of one-out walks to Ryan and Austin Portner, then Beiswanger loaded the bases with a single to left field.

Lara followed with a single through the right side to bring home Ryan for a 9-0 lead. After a force-out at home, Werries received a bases-loaded walk to score Beiswanger for the final run.

Both Ryan and Werries each drove in three runs for Butler. Werries went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Lara was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Ryan, Beiswanger and Lara all scored two runs each.
