Grizzlies End First Conference Series 2-2 After Saturday Split with Seward

Story by Kalon Fullerton

The Butler Grizzlies earned the series split with the Seward Saints as they split the double header at McDonald Stadium on Saturday, dropping the first game of the day 8-4 before outlasting the Saints in game two with a 4-3 victory.

Seward jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one and the Grizzlies never recovered. Josh Holmes hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch to cut into the lead, but Seward put up two more in the second and Butler was not able to recover. Alan Benhardt also hit a homer, a solo shot to right field in the third, one of two RBIs on the day for the Grizzly outfielder.

A two run home run from Justin Hudson in the fifth inning decided the second game of the day, as Hudson's sixth homer of the year gave the Grizzlies a 4-3 lead that they would keep for the rest of the game.

Preston Glitner earned the victory in game one, pitching four innings and allowing three runs. Blake Werry came into the game in the ninth inning and retired the side in order for his third save of the year.

The Grizzlies improve to 9-9 on the year, and are now 2-2 after this week's conference opener. The Grizzlies will head to Ark City for a one game showdown with the Cowley Tigers on Tuesday before a four game series against Highland, with the first two on the road before finishing the series at McDonald Stadium on Saturday.
