Grizzlies Fall to Cowley in Mid-Week Heartbreaker

The Butler Baseball team hosted Cowley in their second matchup with the Tigers and fell 9-7 despite holding a two run lead going into the final inning.

Butler baseball kept fans on the edge of their seats in a mid-week matchup with Cowley at McDonald's Stadium. When the two teams met earlier this season it was the Grizzlies that were victorious in their first defeat of the Tigers since 2015.

Cowley began the Tuesday afternoon game putting up an early one run lead in the first inning and the Grizzlies remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when they put up three runs. Cowley quickly tied things up in the top of the sixth and we remained 3-3 until a Brock Kuehler two run homer put the Grizzlies up 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth. The Butler lead did not last long in the final inning of the game, as the Tigers put up six runs in the top of the ninth to take a four run lead. Grizzly bats battled in the bottom of the ninth as an Alan Benhardt double scored Triston Speaker and a Brock Kuehler single drove in Benhardt. With two outs, Brock Toothaker kept hopes alive with a strong shot to dead center that looked like it might make it over the fence but was unfortunately caught on the warning track for the final out of the game. The Grizzlies fell 9-7 to the Cowley Tigers.

It was a staff effort on the pitching side of the game as the mound saw nine different Grizzly arms in the nine inning game.

The Butler Baseball record becomes 23-15 on the season, remaining 10-6 in conference as they prepare for their next series with the #7 ranked Barton Cougars. The series will begin at home with a double header at McDonald Stadium Thursday at 1 & 3 p.m.
