Soccer picks up much needed road win over Barton Saturday afternoon

Coming off their first conference loss last week at Cowley, the Butler soccer team picked up a much-needed road win over a tough Barton Cougar team Saturday in Great Bend winning 3-2 to improve to 10-4-1 overall and 8-1 in KJCCC play.

With the win, the Grizzlies hold a three-game lead in the KJCCC East standings over Coffeyville.

Butler has struggled right out the gate this season giving up early goals and having to fight back right from the jump. That was again the case Saturday as Barton scored in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

That lead didn't last long as Kim McAlpine had an answer just two minutes later scoring an unassisted goal to tie the game at 1-1.  Butler would score two more goal in the first half, one from Natalie Amaya (assist Madeline Boman) in the 21st minute and then Morgan Houston found the back of the net off the assist from Nayeli Reveles and Carsyn Soto to give Butler a 3-1 lead going into the half.

With the wind playing a major factor in the game, Barton would have the advantage in the second half with the gusty Kansas wind at their back. They would get within striking distance late in the half as Dahien Cabrera scored in the 79th minute to bring the game 3-2 but their comeback bit came up short as time expired on the Cougars.

In the first half with the wind, Butler managed 11 shots compared to just three in the second half. Barton had three shots in the first and seven in the second half playing with the wind. Ashton Conley picked up the win with five saves off seven shots on goal.

Butler will travel to Kansas City Kansas on Wednesday, October 13th for a matchup with the Blue Devils at 6:00pm. They return home on Saturday, October 16th for a 6:00pm matchup with Neosho.
