Volleyball continues sweeping streak improving to 4-0 on the year

The Butler Volleyball team has played four matches this season with just 12 total sets, sweeping all four opponents with the most recent win coming Monday night over Independence.

The defeated the Pirates in three straight sets, 25-20, 25-8 and 25-18. The Grizzlies controlled the first set, but the Pirates put together a late stretch of points to close the gap. Butler would settle themselves and finish the first set with a five-point 25-20 win.

Set two saw the Grizzlies dominant the entire way through. They had 25 total attacks with zero errors and 10 total kills in the set. They didn't allow the Pirate hitters to get going and shut them down holding them under 10 points in the set.

Butler fell behind early in set three trailing 5-1 but responded taking a 7-6 lead. The Pirates weren't ready to quit as they regained the lead 11-8. Butler scored on six of the next nine serves and regained the lead for the final time at 14-13. The Grizzlies held that lead the rest of the way to win 25-18.

Freshmen Carly Clennan and Kayli Duncan led the way with six kills apiece in the match. Clennan finished with four blocks while Duncan added five. Sophomore Jaryn Benning tallied five kills with seven digs and an ace. Lara Sosa had 13 set assists while Jessie Nibarger put up 10. Sydney Morrow chalked up 12 digs to lead the team while Sydney Hefty finished with 10 digs and two serving aces.

NEXT UP: This was the first of six matches slated for this week with the next happening on the road on Thursday, February 4 in Colby against the Trojans at 6:30pm. The Grizzlies will then travel north to the McCook Tournament where they will play two matches on Friday and two more Saturday before returning home.
