Grizzlies pick up bounce back win in 3-0 sweep of Independence

The Butler volleyball team (10-6, 5-4) responded well after Monday's road loss with a 3-0 sweep of the Independence Pirates on Thursday night in the Power Plant.

The Grizzlies handled the Pirates in all three sets 25-17, 25-12, 25-18 with Independence threatening only once in set three where they held the lead for a short stint. Butler has now won the last 16 matchups with Independence dating back to the 2006 season.

Jaryn Benning led the team in kills for the third straight match with nine on the night. She had seven digs and four blocks with an ace. Mallory Cowman put down seven balls in the match hitting .357% while Carly Clennan finished with six kills and four blocks. Caitlyn Rexroat had five kills and three digs. Sophomore libero Sydney Hefty led the team with 17 digs with Sydney Morrow right behind her at 16 digs in the match. Morrow also posted a season high four serving aces. Jessie Nibarger finished with 18 set assists and two serving aces.

"We had our moments and stretches of playing well tonight," said head coach Lisa Lechtenberg in now in her third season at Butler. "We really passed the ball well tonight and this team blocks a lot of balls, so I want us to put a full match together but overall, we did well."

NEXT UP: Butler (10-6, 5-4) will host Barton (14-3, 6-1) on Saturday, March 6 who they fell to on the road to on Monday in a 3-1 match. The match is slated for a 2:30pm first serve from the Power Plant in El Dorado, KS.
