Butler takes down Blue Dragons for just second time in 19 seasons

For just the second time in the past 19 seasons, the Butler Volleyball team defeated the Hutchinson Blue Dragons 3-1 on Monday afternoon in the Power Plant.

Butler swept the Blue Dragons a season ago at home on September 23, 2019 making it the first time since September 11, 2002 that the Grizzlies had defeated Hutchinson. They did it again, this time in a 3-1 home victory winning 25-19, 15-25, 25-19, 25-23.

Butler took advantage of the Blue Dragons lack luster passing night and took a quick 1-0 lead in the match taking set one in a hurry 25-19. Caitlyn Rexroat had seven kills in set one while sophomore Jaryn Benning added in six.

Hutchinson showed why they are a top ranked team in the conference dominating the Grizzlies in set two winning 25-16. Butler committed five attack errors and two serving errors which hindered any kind of comeback attempt.

The Grizzlies got back on the offensive and went after the Blue Dragons. The Grizzlies historically this season have been good in early sets and then let the lead slip. They easily could have shut it down after a subpar performance in set two, but they came out attacking and finished off the Blue Dragons in the next two sets to win the match 3-1.

Jaryn Benning and Caitlyn Rexroat both had big nights for Butler. Benning finished with 18 kills hitting .350 and had 13 digs. Rexroat added in 13 kills and 22 digs in the match. Kayli Duncan came up big in the final set blocking the final two attacks from Hutchinson scoring them for points to end the match. She finished with five blocks on the night.

NEXT UP: Butler will play their final regular season game of the year on Thursday, March 25 as they travel to Garden City to face the Broncbusters at 6:30pm. They will look to avenge their five-set loss last week to the Broncbusters this coming Thursday on the road.
